I currently have a cassette player in my car, but have a CD player that I took out of my old car. Is it possible to pay Halfords to fit it for me, or will they only fit equipment that has been purchased from them?

you will be best to get a local auto electrician to do the job? make sure they are good tho!!

It's actually very simple. There should be 2 connections - ariel & power/speakers

The power/speakers loom might need a converter that you can get by going to most car spares shops armed with the model of car and make of radio.

Saying that though, Halfords, or any other Motor factors shop should fit it for you if you're not confident.

Depending on how new or old you car/radio is you may find that it has a multipin plug and socket on the back. The CD player may have the same, if not, you can in some cases by and adaptor so that they cassette and CD player can be interchanged. Halfords have lots of them.
