if you look closely there are small crossbars between the tread, they are called wear bars. when they become flush with the tread its time for new tires.
The legal limit for cars is 1.6mm across the tread. For some reason the minimum limit on trucks is 1mm across 3/4 of the tread.

I have no reason to disbelieve sddsdean, but if he is right the law has changed since the MOT testers manual website was last updated in 2002. It says the tread must be at least 1.6mm for the central three quarters of the width and for the whole circumference.

You could be right Grunty, but I'm sure I read somewhere its supposed to over the whole tread. Wheres KebabMeister when you need him!!

sorry sddsdean i have to agree with grunty on this one

but one thing i cant understand is why do they allow recut tyres on the front of hgv's

You cannot have recut on the front of HGVor PCV only on the drive axle and trailer and not on the steering axle. There is so much rubber that there is so much rubber to make a cutting.

I would not like to have any bald patch anywhere. Just imagine you cant do a right hand bend because you fear that your going to slide off the road.Change the trye.

Get remoulds but dont go over 50- 60 mph

Stay Legal

As far as i know (which isn't far!!) you can have re cut tyres on steering axle, but personally I wouldn't for obvious safety reasons etc. In fact I have given up re cutting tyres on my truck, as it takes so flaming long and only gives about another 2 months on that tyre. I just shell out another 215(+VAT) for a new tyre. Having said that, the best tyres I had were on my old DAF 95 tractor unit. I had Michelin MXR's on the drive axle and with one cut, they did 600,000 km! Wish I could get that on a car!
