Hi, Can any one tell me what the purple tubes, sticking up in the ground like mortar guns, are on either side of the motorway between Junctions 17 and 14. They appear to be flexi pipes of some sorts.

They are also in racks in the road work section. The intriguing part is that they are all sticking above ground at various heights.

It is bothering the wife, who in turn is bothering me!

Many thanks

It is ducting that has been put in place for future use. You will probably find a new matrix sign system being installed over the next few months. The ducting is used all over the country, purple being standard colour for 'Motorway Communications' (Thats matrix signs to you and me!).
Forgot to say, its left sticking out of the ground so the next 'gang' can find the ends!!

You are all wrong there for the new stealth speed cameras!

Wrong . .. As sddean says - they are known as purple pythons and are for upgrading the VMS matrix signs. This is being carried out all over the UKs 4000 odd mile motorway network
