Really good to see Ed’s name come up again. In his early days of building unusual vehicles he was invited by Mark Bond of Incarace (oval sport promoter in the Midlands) to showcase the settee and some other variants at Hednesford and they had me doing the photography – Ed was a really funny bloke to talk to. It was a long time ago though. To give you an idea, my digital camera was a very early one which stored pics on floppy disk.

I do! He was just - by a year or so - before my time as track snapper. Phil & Mark had taken over by the time I joined as track snapper / programme designer / blah blah.

Yeah. I was quite a pushy type in those days and thought the programme looked a bit bland, so I designed an alternative template – and they liked it. Ended up producing a monthly magazine for them and doing track photography. Also got involved with their oval racing track days, but when they took over Northampton the travel got too much (I lived near Buxton) so I had to give it up.
BTW Mark was quite involved in the creation of Rockingham, although I’ve never been there and I'm not sure exactly what role he played.

I used to love the figure of 8 racing as a kid at Hednesford hills, when did figure of 8 get a name change to destruction derby ?.

I fondly remember the days of the Grimmer brothers fight it out on the west bend with Stuart Jackson.

It didn’t Tony – DD & Fig8 were always different things, the DD usually being at the end of a meeting, for whichever Bangers were worth putting in for a final blast before scrapping.
Incarace used to host the World Destruction Derby once a year, but ditched it after metal prices went up and cars became harder to find at low cost. Most Fig8 races featured Street Stox which were like Bangers but more heavily armoured.
If you were a kid watching DDs, chances are you remembered the Fig8 because in the DD you can use any part of the track so you’ll have seen cars using the intersection. It’s possible you’ll have seen Banger Fig8 races though – they used to be popular. They’re less so now. Like I said, metal prices have gone up so drivers try to keep cars going for as long as possible. Safety has become an issue too – some years ago at Buxton there was an horrific freak accident that nearly killed a driver (I got a great pic but would never publish it) and it’s made promoters think twice about running these races.
