A flippin' Wood Pigeon is sitting in my false acacia tree seemingly nibbling at the new leaves. What is it eating?

Yep, sounds about right Tilly, little *** have nearly stripped my Cherry tree...It's the new growth that they love..
Wood Pigeon (and other birds) will eat tender buds and very new leaves. That's one of the reasons they are classed as pests.
//Most of its diet is vegetable, round and fleshy leaves from Caryophyllaceae, Asteraceae, and cruciferous vegetables taken from open fields or gardens and lawns; young shoots and seedlings are favoured, and it will take grain, pine nuts, and certain fruits and berries. In the autumn they also eat figs and acorns, and in winter buds of trees and bushes.//
Thank Wiki.

I watched a peregrine rip the heart out of a live pigeon the other day. Not a pretty sight!
Or a PereGrrrrine...
I frequently find carcasses in the garden as we have one that hunts over us.
Absolutely blooming pests! I have one, sometimes two, pinching food I leave out for the other birds of a morning. Drives me nuts chasing them away, and they never give up trying.

one of these will work, a local farmer putting one in a neighbouring field, two bangs every twenty minutes in daylight....it's scared off all the rooks herewell and truly - however, the pheasants just pull two fingers at it and carry on pecking in the seeded field.

They are very persistent, puss. (but a bit stupid, I think)
They are very nice on a warm salad with nuts and other healthy stuff.
and cooked rare and rested, shoota....anybody want a recipe?

How much meat is there on a wood pigeon, shoota?

....and DTC?

it could just be attempting to rattle you, because it is planning to stage a 'coo'

i'll get my coat

The breast is the only bit worth eating but one bird will do two as a starter or one as a (smallish) main course. There is probably as much meat in two breasts from an adult as there is in a chicken breast.
