Dartford Tolls Increase again.

For cars this has increased from £1.50 to £2.

Is this a good move or will it encourage more motorists to use the Blackwall Tunnel.

It`s just a con to get more money out of people. Most people that use the crossing have no choice. There`s no alternative way across although for people like me who live the other side of London, it`ll probably encourage us to go clockwise instead.
I can remember when it was much less. I recall not having money and writing a cheque for 12 and a half pence! yes - really.
I went through the tunnel today and paid the £2. It won't stop people using it I don't think but it is a huge increase. It wouldn't be so bad if they hadn't said the toll would finish once the QE bridge was paid for! Or if the increase was to go toward something specific that might reduce congestion..
Last time I used the Woolwich ferry it's free.

Yes if you've got the time the Woolwich ferry is very relaxing. But why didn't they continue with the Thames Gateway bridge which allowed M11 users to travel South and relieve the M25 and Dartford Crossing. Boris Johnson put the kybosh on that one but it seemed a very sensible move.

I seem to recall that the government promised that once the construction costs had been recouped through tolls (which happened a few years back), the crossing would be free.

As ever Joe Public is stiffed by the government – its like taking out a loan with a bank, paying back a fixed amount each month for an agreed period. Then when you have fully paid off the loan the bank says ‘oh no – you’ve got to keep paying the monthly amounts forever, which will increase to whatever I decide’.
Dartford tunnel should now be free, too much congestion now at the tollbooths, in my opinion.
However you can get it cheaper by using a Dart Tag. Works out to £1.33 per use for cars instead of £2.

To think that the tolls were to be suspended last year was just a pipedream. As mentioned the crossing has paid for itself. Its now just a cash cow!
