That may be a bit extreme for Fords of the last few years but I was surprised by this. The wife has a '98 Fiesta. The driver's door lock broke, it would lock but not unlock. So perhaps this is the most secure lock Ford has made, albeit by accident. Got a replacement from the scrapyard. The key that came with it also unlocked all locks on the wife's car. The existing key the wife had also worked with the scrapyard lock.

So that old saying "any Ford Cortina key opens any Ford Cortina" should be amended to remove the word "Cortina"

I remember in the 80s that Ford were well known for only using six different lock patterns. The door key of an escort would start a Capri and open the boot of a Granada etc. Thieves only had to have a set of all six and they could drive away any Ford. I can't believe it's the same now though. Perhaps it is.
gawd I hope not. We have struggled to get a 2nd hand car, yep it's a Ford Fiesta/ If I catch anyone trying to nick it, then someone had better help them.

May I direct you to Simon Mayo's confession slot on Radio 2 this week about the rival sales reps in the late 60's with their Mk. II Cortinas and matching keys. A classic. Find it on iplayer and giggle.

yes that happened to me too. I was a student at the time so they only got 20 yards in the Viva before it ran out of petol and I caught up with them on foot.
Strictly .. There are Tibbe keys (the faceted angled type)
Chubb are spikey, and any key will lock any other.

If yours is gunked up solid .. many keys would lock or unlock it, because many of the tumbler plates' springs will have broken or the tumblers are set in the unlock position.
I owned a rover SDI. Parked it and went shopping. On return the car boot was full of someone else's shopping. I waited until he returned. We both complained to Rover to no avail. Is it any wonder they failed and went out of buisness.
I believe most of the gloveboxes filled with water too.
Unlocking is one thing, starting the engine is another.
I don't think it was confined to Fords so much. I had a Vauxhall Cavalier in the 90s that could be opened and started with a screwdriver. I used to start it with the key then put it in my pocket because it kept falling out of the ignition! On the other hand my mate bought an Astra on which you couldn't start it at all with the key or anything. The seller had rigged up a way of jump starting it by touching something on the battery. I have no idea what possessed him to buy that.
The Tibbie key will lock any vehicle but in theory shouldnt open any vehicle, but wear and tear can cause problems.
also if the Tibbie key is 'PATS' even if you gain entry you are not going anywhere.
Correct .. in fact both verions .. Tibbe and Chubb, which have self-centering tumblers.
