My son has bought a car which has been on a SORN.
The car's previous owner's son has just got it MOT'd.
My son would like to pick it up and drive it home tomorrow.
It hasn't got tax yet. He will phone the insurance company to insure it tomorrow. But he needs the insurance document to tax it, doesn't he?
Can insurance companies email the insurance policy? And can he get tax for the car on the same day ( he hasn't got one of those letters from the DVLA with the prices and instructions on ) So is it ok to go into the post office and ask to tax a car and give them the reg. number? Is this at all possible to do everything on the same day? Is it possible to drive the car without the tax disc? Any help most welcome.

the insurers will often email a pdf cover note for printing off.
he then needs his section of the log book V5 (??) and the insurance and mot details and to go to a post office that issues tax.
he'll need the MOT certificate, the V5 (log book).. or at least the tear off strip that the previous owner must give him, and the insurance doc. most insurance companies will email the docs now.
documents required to tax the car in a post office are

valid MOT
certificate of motor insurance
& the V5 since it has been SORN or the new keepers document from the V5

insurers can send you the certificate as an attachment in an email that can be printed off
or it can be faxed to you
or they can provide a temporary cover note

When I tax mine online, the software automatically checks for insurance on their database. I don't have to do anything :o)
You can't tax a SORN'd vehicle online, Builder.
Ah......... fair enough :o(
there is a form when you haven't got a v10 (log book)!
think its v11!
do not drive without tax disc displayed!
*unsure of numbers/names but i have done it before x
He certainly can't drive it without a tax disc.

As it has been SORN'd, it will ping any Police car with an ANPR camera.
the V10 is the form you need to complete. Keep in mind that he will have to pay for tax from beginning of November http://www.direct.gov...alasset/dg_065263.pdf
You use the V11 to re-sorn or tax the car.
As long as you have it .. you can re-tax online.
The insurance cover will/should be applied to the database (which will be checked when taxing)

Thank you everyone. He has the V5/C2, and the MOT certificate. How will he go about things if he wants to drive it tomorrow. If the insurance company will email him a policy tomorrow, what is the soonest he can get a tax disc, is it possible he could do that tomorrow as well We are finding this all very confusing. Thanks in advance.
(As Red says .. If you don't have the V11, you use a V10)
He'll drive illegally.

V10 or V11.

Thank you for your answers. He only has the V5 thing. He doesn't have V10 or V11, so what can he do?
either download the v10 i linked to or pick it up at postoffice tomorrow
Question Author
Thanks very much redcrx. So do you think it's possible he could drive it tomorrow?
yes, its really all waiting on whether he can get a certificate from insurers.
Question Author
Thanks, I hope he can. It's been such a pickle.

What about the V11 though? Do we need that as well as the V10?
