what do you call something that seems to have no place.. like an outcast or something but outcast suggests it has been purposely thrown out rather than just not having a place...

When you say something, do you mean a person or an animal - something sentient?

How about 'Rootless' or 'Drifter'? Or 'Itinerant'...

How about 'misfit', if you're looking for a noun rather than an adjective?

I'm looking for an object rather than a person. So a noun maybe... it's something that doesn't really fit in anywhere or possibly something that is overlooked often... doesn't have to be a single word.. can be two or three but needs to be short. :o) Thanks people
'alien'? It's not perfect, but may be close... Or 'transient'?
a fifth wheel? an oddment?
Oddity, perhaps?
curio?
An incongruity?
You don't mean surplus? Or Flotsam and Jetsam? Or if it's a person, stateless?
surplus to requirements?
