Can I hijack and ask to see theworking? [I don't know the answer.]

48 on the coach

half = 24 + 8 = 32

2/3 = 32 - 20 = 12

32+21 = 44

Or have I missed something?
32 + 12 = 44 (not as above)
72

Let P = total numbers of passengers

1/2 P + 8 + 2/3 P - 20 = P

Multiply everything by 6

3P + 48 + 4P - 120 = 6P
3P + 4P - 6P = 120 - 48
P = 72

Males 44, Females 28
x/2 + 8 +2x/3 - 20 = x multiply throughout by 6
3x + 48 +4x - 120 = 6x tranpose
3x + 4x - 6x = 120 - 48
x = 72 passengers

36 + 8 = 44 men
48 - 20 - 28 women

As to how many were on the coach, I suppose strictly speaking the answer should be 73 - the coach trip isn't going to get very far without a driver!
Thank you.
