Unusual TV picture

I recently purchased a SONY 31" Flat Screen TV. When watching TV "head-on" that is looking straight at the screen the picture is fine.
However should we be sat to the side however slightly the picture appears to go very grey and it is only when we move back to face the screen directly is the picture OK
Has anyone experienced this and if so what make TV were they watching.
At this stage I dont know if the problem is my TV or a "built in" fault.
Any comments appreciated
Thanks

Welcome to the world of flat panel TVs.

Each model has a maximum viewing angle but before that angle is reached you will observe colours fall off to grey in comparison to the "head on" view.
