Slimfandango has been dreaming alot recently....and it made me think/dream.....how long do dreams usually last...say i slept for 7 hours...when i wake up i can piece together massive acts of randomness that seem to have lasted forhours...Are dreams actually really short like 10 minutes but they feel like ages or can they be much longer? Also my ex-girlfriend used to tell me she could contol her dreams...i was always a sceptic...Is this possible or have i done well getting rid of the curious dream bending creature she was?

dunno how long dreams last but I can confirm it is definitely possible for some people to 'control' their dreams, (at least to some degree).

Ever since my teens I've been able to recognise most of the time that I am in a dream & can quite often determine what happens next - especially if it's a flying dream.  If I can't actually control the dream I am usually at least aware that I'm not really in Tesco's with no pants on!  Also, I can almost always return to my dreams if I want to.

I think the term is known as lucid dreaming but I've no idea why some people are more susceptible to it.

Thanks for your reply...I have a further Q...Have you ever been in Tesco without a thong or a pair of Y's on whilst not dreaming?

I would like to take this opportunity to confirm that i have never in dream or in reality been into tesco with a thong on or even in y-fronts... thank you

Additionally I generally know when i'm dreaming and can control events within them... i got really drunk in a dream last week and woke up in the morning still feeling hammered (hadn't drunk a drop the night before) - took about 10 mins of wobbling around my flat and giggling to feel normal again - that was strange... and a rather boring story... sorry

Im now gonna post that as a Q in its own right...IN THE SHOPPING SECTION!!!!
: - )

I don't think I have coffers1 - unless I just thought I was dreaming...!
I also have lucid/controllable dreams,

And I haven't been in tesco's without pants, although I once didn't have socks or shoes on in December but thats another story.
I have read that dreaming experiments using filmed volunteers and random eye movement detectors suggest that the dreamer's perceived duration of  the dream is the same as the time it actually takes.

i dont know if its ture but iheard that dreams are short but you havr lots of them in one night, and it is possible to control your dream and some people can bring other people into there dream so say a daughter brings her mum into the dream when they wake they will both have had the same dream. its a strange land dreamland but so comfy.

i am a lucid dreamer - as is my dad. it can have it's advantages, like when you're having a bad dream, you can remove yourself or make it funny instead. it also means that if you dream of working or any physical exertion, you wake up absolutely knackered!

I'm interested to know if anyone else experiences the following: i remember my dreams on waking and then they quickly fade. But, just before i go to sleep the following night, I suddenly remember them really clearly!

Crisgal - Yes the same thing happens to me!  I often forget my dreams as soon as I wake up  - but the minute my head hits the pillow again that night I remember them..
Dreams start just as u are about to drop off and wake up.

Think is though, i thought that the reason you dream is so your sub-consicious can unwind and try to digest your fears and woes and deep deep thoughts...If you can change your dream into one where your in bed with girls aloud and an industrial size can of whipped cream (for example, this hasnt actually happend :)) then the unwinding process wont happen....thoughts????
