having read ynnafymmi's post below about great expectations, in which she asserts it's the best film ever made on 4 separate occasions, i was wondering what YOU thought the best film ever made was - it may or may not be your favourite film, but what is it for you?

Too many categories to choose 'a best film ever' butr in the wartime category I would suggest The Cruel Sea.Jack Hawkins wa an actor who always gave his all to a role.
Davebro //Why is Tom Hanks so "watchable"? He's an ordinary looking kinda guy but he just rules any film he's in. He's quite remarkable.//

There have been countless studies done on that- and basically seem to come down to a scientifically "kind" face...

I have to cheat as well... no idea which were the "best", but my all-time favourites include...
The Life of David Gale
Dead Poet's Society
One Last Call
K-Pax
Titanic
Love, Actually
The Holiday

And many weirder ones, not worth mentioning:-)
Danny I too like films about WW2 one of my favourites being The Colditz Story with John Mills
Also, Alive, backtrack, and the original Teenwolf and BttF (as a teenager)...
Margot, John Mills was another fine actor who cold ypou believe in his charcters. I particularly liked his portrayal in Hobson's Choice.
I used to look after him, lovely gentleman.
When was that Pixie?
The Family Way was another excellent film starring John and Hayley Mills. A very moving performance from John Mills.
Many, many years ago, Danny. Maybe 15,20? I genuinely had no idea then, that he, or his daughters were actors. Found out many years later. He was blind, but still played piano, which is probably general knowledge.
Yes a great actor excellent in everything he did
Jno, I wondered whether Googlewasnohelp was referring to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but as far as cartoons go, I thought it was a series. At least he's celebrating my profile pic with having Totoro as his other choice.
Great question, bednobs.....

For me, it has to be The Shawshank Redemption and the way it's story is told.....brilliant acting all round.....remember seeing this at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon, on a very limited cinema release, as it was not given a large cinema outing, as I recall, but went on to be a top video rental and seller, and achieved bit of a cult status.
Superb movie. I have it proudly sitting amongst my Blu Ray collection.

Song of Bernadette and Jaws also deserve a mention.

I never got right through Shawshank Redemption. But suspect I should. Like the Green Mile.
I like...
The Green Mile is also a superb film, pixie, well made, just shy of 3 hours, but never lags.

I agree.... must try the Shawshank Redemption again. I probably wasn't paying attention enough.
Hopefully, pixie, you won't regret giving The Shawshank Redemption another try.....Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in their career bests, in my opinion.
The Shawshank Redemption is a great film but I took the OP to mean the best film ever made rather than personal favourites. If personal favourites were up there Some Like it Hot, Singin’ in the Rain, and Disney’s Cinderella would be on my list.
I love the Shawshank Redemption, definitely up there for me after many recommendations and still not watching it for years, always on the back burner.
I really enjoyed Tim Robbins's performance in Arlington Road.

Best movie ever? It's so subjective. If I had to choose one I would probably say Schindler's List, because ... well, for lots of reasons. It's powerful.
