having read ynnafymmi's post below about great expectations, in which she asserts it's the best film ever made on 4 separate occasions, i was wondering what YOU thought the best film ever made was - it may or may not be your favourite film, but what is it for you?

Christopher Lee's in both of them.
Indeed mozz - and I don’t like Martin Freeman anyway which didn’t help. Whatever part he plays he’s Doctor Watson. A typical John Wayne who was always John Wayne.
I actually don't mind Freeman and thought he was a good Bilbo (although not in the same league as Ian Holm was as the older Bilbo). I do know what you mean though. There are a fair few actors who suffer similarly from that: Michael Caine, Jack Nicholson, Nicholas Cage...
Some interesting replies, but in my opinion the best film was Singin' In The Rain. It had comedy, song, dance and contemporary issues for the film industry with the birth of talking pictures.
Love Story
Oliver
I disagree, Mozz, the Michael Caine in Alfie's very different from the one in Zulu or the one who acted for Woody Allen or Paolo Sorrentino. It's up to directors what they want to get out of him, and if most of them just want the brassy cockney, that's what they'll get - he doesn't mind.
Bednobs - You make an absolutely fair point, my apologies for not reading your OP closely enough.

I never 'mansplain' intentionally, if I came across like that, my apologies once again.
Georgiesmum - I watched Love Story the other day.

I hadn't realised that Tommy Lee Jones was in it (as "Tom" Lee Jones)

But also that the Ryan O'Neil character was actually based on him and on his roommate at Harvard, who was Al Gore.
Jno, he still tends to be variations of Michael Caine though, the obvious exception being Get Carter.

I'm not criticising, Michael Caine is an extremely likeable and watchable actor. Why change a winning formula?
I'm just suggesting he can do other characters if anyone asks him. He did the Get Carter part again in Mona Lisa. But he was different in, say Children of Men.
Great Expectations,Ring of Bright Water,Tunes of Glory. All three extremely watchable.
Don't know about best film ever, but among my favourites are The Lady Killers,( Alec Guiness etc) The Apartment ( Jack Lemmon/ Shirley MacLaine), and my best western, the The Magnificent Seven.
I am not much of a film buff though I do have some favourites, so I'll happily cast another vote for Hobson's Choice - just marvellous.
It's a Wonderful Life, with James Stewart, more than just a Christmas film, dark in many ways, after all he goes to commit suicide, then is rescued by an angel Clarence, great film, brilliant performances by Stewart and the rest of the cast. I love it, and have seen it endless times.
It's not easy choosing best flick.
Blazing Saddles and Airplane are 2 of them I also liked the 3 colours trilogy.
