I lasted about 10 minutes. It bears no relation to the real Hyacinth. Didn't look or sound like her.
The man playing her father was a large chap whereas in the real programme "daddy" was a little runt of a man.
So don't understand why they made it like that.

Good grief, that's a lot.
Are you sure about that, Chico? I have made a few calls from my BT landline and paid upwards of £2 for 30 minutes.
Really Buenchico? I forgot to bring my phone with me when I was away recently and needed to use a pay phone. I didn't get anything like that amount of time for my 60p.
^^^ Callbox charges work out quite expensive for the short calls which most people make, JD33, but (at 10p per 15 minutes plus a 40p connection charge) they can be significantly cheaper than using a home landline for really long calls.

A 1 hour call on the most basic of BT calling plans (other than at weekends) would cost £6.60 (because it's 11p per minute) plus a 19p set-up fee, totalling £6.79, which is obviously far more expensive than the 80p that you'd pay in a phone box.

That's what I was thinking, Clover. Never known a payphone be cheaper than a home landline.
Cloverjo:
My example (supported by the link I've provided) is based upon a call to an 01, 02 or 03 number. If you were calling a mobile your 60p pays for the 40p connection charge and just 19 seconds of time (because you get 9.5 seconds for every 10p).
That explains it, Buenchico. Thank you. 19 seconds sounds about right for the time I got for my 60p.
It must cost BT more to collect the money from phone boxes than they make from the calls, nowadays.

" . . . in rural areas we've got 12,000 payphones that haven't made one call a month in the last 12 months" :

Chris...for someone who does so much research for question askers on here why haven't you got a better PAYG deal?
Surprised that phone boxes still exist, given the ubiquity of mobiles.
I've actually got the best PAYG deal for my needs, Ummmm.

I only make one call every few months on my mobile, plus a handful of texts now and then. (I've just checked my credit and see that I've used about a fiver so far this year). My phone is for emergencies only; I don't use it for internet access as I prefer to use my netbook and seek out free wifi.

I'm fully aware that I could theoretically cut my call costs by buying 'bundles' but that only applies if I actually make any calls. Otherwise (since Vodafone bundles automatically expire after 30 days) I'd just be paying for credit that I'd never use.

So the basic Vodafone tariff (at 30p per minute) is fine for me as it's only costing me around a tenner a year in total.
^^^ PS: Although I get charged 30p per minute to make calls in the UK, I only get charged 4p per minute when calling the UK from any other EU country, so I know that I'll be able to contact someone in the UK if I ever get stranded abroad for some reason.
I think young Hyacinth would have been aghast at the inability of folk to stick to the bleedin' point. :)
I only watched it for a bit then found my attention wandering. Didn't spot much humour; didn't feel the characters looked much like younger versions of the folk who played the normal series. Turned over. Script needed a few more revisions, and more attention paid to the looks of the actors/actresses at the audition stage, before it was put on public display, I think.
Didn't like it at all. Patricia Routledge as a young woman was much bigger than this slim girl (seen her in films) and I totally agree about 'Daddy' being such a big man. Disappointed.
Just because Patricia Routledge was a big woman in her younger days it doesn't mean Hyacinth was.
I gave my reasons for not liking it hc, I have no wish to debate it.
I have to say I thought she did sound vefy much like her, but as for the rest, no!
What on earth are that lot ^^ banging on about???

My mother had a 'telephone voice'. It was hilarious.
