Following from an earlier thread about racism, with a similar heading:

Is class consciousness (and the closely related 'snobbery')Dying out? Are old people more conscious of class ? Do we still have the old sketch with Cleese, Barker and Corbett ," I look down on him" and "I know my place". When I think back to my grandmother; "It's all right dear, they don't feel pain like the rest of us", of a servant who'd cut herself; and newsreels which could be summarised by "Look at the happy faces of the children of the working class", they could be talking about black people or piccaninnies. And older people seem much aware of class than young ones; is Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) still with us?

Not know. I think it died out about 100 years ago. There aren't any elderly people i know that still think that way.

Yes I am......I can't speak for other people.

I cannot come to terms with homosexuality.

I am slowly coming to terms mixed racial marriages.

I tend to be ant-semitic.

I still feel that with a 3 tiered class one has ain incentive to "better ones self."

Well, Fred, you did ask.
I'm not sure any of those examples show "class-consciousness" or "snobbishness", sqad. More "outdatedness". ;-)
pixie...LOL...right.
what, Fred? You mean not everyone believes we're all in this together??
I asked the butler to speak with the kitchen staff about this. He tells me that, in their opinion, I'm neither snobbish nor class conscious.
Well alternatively it's modern, then, to be antisemitic, homophobic and care about who people fall in love with? Of course those views are outdated. That said, I have to give credit to you for admitting them.
I think you may have something there. Some of my old aunties were a bit snobbish, but I wouldn't say any of my cousins are.

Depends if you have room for a Pony or not!

Yeah, well, Baldric, we've all got room for twenty-five nicker.
Is it snobbery - or standards? I do think people who bang on about 'the Tories' and 'the toffs' are inverted snobs.
As I was saying to my butler this morning, 'I don't like to think I'm at all class conscious'.
Class consciousness and snobbery may not go together. I think there is a certain diffidence and lack of confidence in some of the older generation regarding posh hotels and other situations where they might come across their "betters". This doesn't necessarily give those people snobbish attitudes to those who might pick up the wrong knife or whose dress may be inappropriate. Of course there are people who are so thick that they cannot see through the trappings and value people as they are.
I don't think its Class Conscious Or Snobbish, more like not accepting changes!

I used to criticize teenagers in the past about the latest music they listen to, and why all the screaming when they see their pop idols.

But its no difference to when I was young in the late 50s and 60s when the Beatles and the rest came on the scene!
seadogg, that's exactly right.
Not in my experience. In my experience the most snobbish people are the nouveau riche
