Mushy peas
I'm a softie Southerner, but in Geordie land I think it's like a fish cake but with a layer of potato included in it.
It's called a scallop in the West Midlands. A thick, round, battered slice of potato.

LOL Fish and chips WITH a dab!
Found this:
When I was a lad in Geordie-land you could get 'dab & chips' from the local chippie. The dab was like a fishcake but it had a layer of potato in the middle - it tasted delicious! Down south in East Anglia you just get met with a blank stare when you ask for such. Do any of you wonderful folk have a local chippy that offers such delights?

(We used to call them (potato) scallops)
Here's the proof - look in the box on the right headed 'chips and fritters'.

Can still get scallops here in Lancs :-)
DAB

any of several flatfishes of the genus Limanda, especially the European flatfish, L. limanda.

Wow, they sound very tasty. Why not have them here down souff?

Must look that one when next at the chippie.
Jno, dab is a fish but rarely (if ever) sold in fish shops.
We call them scallops here .....in East Anglia, and they have them at our local chippy.
A dab to me is a flat fish and very delicious they are too.
the name might have carried across, though, hc4361. Especially if eaten with potatofish.
We call them scallops here in York, never been offered a dab, so as to speak.
2 thin slices of potato, fish in the middle, dipped in batter then deep fried, kids up here love them, our local chippy sells loads of them, £1.20 I think they are.
oh heck..........................informal name for a cigarette. TAB
There's no fish in ours, just potato, wrapped lovingly in heart clogging gorgeous batter.
Listening to the radio while you are having your dinner perhaps ?
it it's either potato or fish why would you have it with fish and chips?
