On the radio just now, some to$$er said these Olympics are full of cultural events. I've said this before, but I thought the Olympic Games was a sports event where people try to win medals and set records. What the fk has culture got to do with it? I've no doubt Danny Boyle will show us, eh? Can't wait for the Morris dancers, the cheese rolling and sheep dog trials. They'll give it all the wow factor eh? I wonder if he's built some reference to Radcliffe British Legion? Another British institution. So far, I get the impression that these games are just for women and children. Never mind. I won't be watching tonight. Got an important game of golf in the morning. Golf comes first. Early to bed!!! Night night all!

The 1948 London Summer Olympics were the final Games in which art competitions were held, after being in the official program for all Games since 1912. At a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in 1949, it was decided to hold art exhibitions instead, as it was judged illogical to permit professionals to compete in the art competitions but only amateurs were permitted to compete in sporting events. Since 1952, a non-competitive art and cultural festival has been associated with each Games.

Did I hear someone say that snooker is an Olympic sport?!
Balls
walk along Londons south bank and just see what is going on. Yes theOlympics is a sporting event but to host the Olympics is to put yourselves in the limelight and London (amongst other places all over the UK apparently) is putting on a show. Born, bred, schooled, live and work in London all my 50 plus years and its one helluva place to be at the moment. It is buzzing. Today I listened to a steel band, a guitar duo, a classical violinist before watching some 'lunatic' (in the nicest way) putting on a comedy escapology act, all within 200 yards and all free. There are events (non sporting) all over the place. It's great fun.
I wonder if they were referring to the Cultural Olympiad?. There have been numerous plays and events put on in the run up (no pun intended) to the Olympics. http://www.london2012...us/cultural-olympiad/
Someone famous (I forget who) referred to golf as a good walk spoiled....Sounds like you are just spoiled. Women and children?????What about our fabulous divers, cyclists and rowers and sailors. Personally, I am not that interested but I still think it is an amazing event to be held in our capital city. PS Morris dancers would be an excellent addition to tonight's proceedings. They perfectly illustrate the gentle daftness which symbolises the British psyche.
Woohoo great to hear that TheNovice, have a fantastic Olympics. I'll be there next week if just for one day, but I can't wait and hope to catch just a taste of the atmosphere.
Maidup - recommend a walk along the South Bank (near Waterloo station), loads of free stuff going on, plus the pay for attractions like the Eye and a fairground on the river with some scary rides. Not far from Westminster and Trafalgar Square either.

And for everyone else stop whingeing and enjoy!!!!!!
