pulled in huge audiences, so much of it's time i expect, I didn't care for it much.

Not John Sullivan's finest hour, perhaps, but still very well written and acted.

If it is Paul Nicholas and 1970s, he was in Two Up, Two Down. I think that's the only comedy series he starred in that decade.
