Is 3D TV worth it?

Anyone got a 3D TV? I was wondering if there is any benefit or is it just a gimmick. Can you get the benefit of viewing a small(ish) tv screen something which is really intended for the cinema? I dont play games. I dont have Sky. I will have to buy a Bluetooth DVD player. What tv progs are there on Freeview and how do you access them? I have seen a budget 3D TV 42" in Sainsburys which seems like very good value. 4 HDMI. 2 SCARTS for £330. It has their own brand stamped on it but I understand it is made in Turkey by Cello who supply all the budget makes in UK under different brands.

Any advice please?

No 3d on freeview and very little on any other channels apart from major sport
you would have to buy a blu-ray dvd player ,not cheap, in all its a gimmick which will most likely give you a headache when watching it also steer well clear of cheapo 3D sets, if you do plum for one go for sony/ Panasonic/ lg / Samsung/and yes think you will have to get a sky box too and 3D needs a large screen,nothing under 40"

You can only get the benefit of 3D if the INPUT to the TV is 3D.

So you need either Sky 3D, or a 3D Blu Ray Player (and a 3D Blu Ray movie "disk")

If you have not got either then it is not worth having a 3D TV.

Also cheap TVs are cheap because they use cheap components and use a lot of electricity over quality TVs (which can mount up over time).

Do yourself a favour and get a decent brand (Samsung, Panasonic, Sony etc).

Which magazine did a test recently where they tested the cost of electricity running a quality "low power usage" TV and a cheap "high power usage" TV.

Over about 4 years the cost of the electricity made the "cheap" TV more expensive than the quality TV because it cost more to run.

We know 3 sets of people who bought 3D TVs, they all admit that they rarely use the 3D option after the novelty wore off. So I'd say, no it's probably not worth buying a 3D TV.

Thanks for the replies. Confirms what I was thinking. I shall now look out for a 'not 3D' 42 inch.

I would buy a normal tv if I were you, 3d channels are not widely available enough to justify buying a tv for, the technology is also still evolving so its still very much a work in progress

Not everyone can view 3D properly and for them looking at 3D is extremely uncomfortable - those with vision in one eye only; those who need prisms in their glasses and others.

I have seen a couple of movies in 3d, its actually quite an effort to watch a whole film in 3d!

Had Shy HD installed recently and asked the guy about 3D. He said to wait a year or two when it will be watchable without the glasses and considerably cheaper.

We've just bought a new TV from Tesco, it's great - freeview installed - there are quite enough channels for us on Freeview (means we can get rid of the freeview box). I wouldn't want 3D TV.
