Once a film has been released, how long is it before you can buy it on DVD or does it vary?

perhaps some that are on in cinema, are popular and will make money don't get released that early, but others that aren't that good go to dvd quite quickly, i must admit i am not sure.
it varies, depending on the film. giant blockbuster will be released onto a dvd later than a less popular film. however, about six months is the maximum you have to wait for any film these days
As an example Sherlock Holmes 2 was in the cinema during January and the discs are released in the middle of May so a gap of 3 months. The Artist is due for release before the end of May which probably makes it slightly less than 3 months.
(oops - a month out with my calculations)
and some aren't even shown in the cinema before release on DVD
that is true, ojread2. if a film takes a dive at the american box office the distributors sometimes decide that a direct-to-dvd release in this country is the only option

Thanks for your answers.
I saw a trailer for a film starring Judi Dench called The Best Exotic Marilgold Hotel and it looks like the type of film I would enjoy but I don't like going to the cinema so hopefully I can buy it on DVD soon.
The average time has reduced significantly over the past decade due to piracy. Some B movies are almost immediately released on DVD.
