i have recently tried to obtain a store card and the credit was refused.  I am on a good income and have never had any problems previously, however the flat next to me at 38a ( mine is 38) have recently had tenants who left several bills un paid resulting in balifs turning up at my flat could this be why I was refused credit?

Sounds like it could be them causing you the problem. Write to Experian, the credit agency. For something like 2 quid they will send you your credit file, and you can see exactly what the problem might be. You can be refused credit for something as simple as applying for too many credit cards per year.
Contrary to popular belief, you cannot obtain a poor credit rating as a direct result of other's actions (other than when they assume their identity). Your neigbours' derogatory information will not be used when credit scoring you. The most likely explanations for you being unable to obtain credit if you have no bad history are: 1) No history at all? It's possible that this company is unwilling to take a risk on an unknown entity 2) Wrongly listed on Voters' Roll? If you are still listed at a previous address it may appear you are fraudulantly applying for credit 3) Or most likely, too many searches! This one thing can be singlehandedly responsible for destroying your credit rating. The best solution to all of the above is as previously mentioned to obtain a copy of your credit file, and check all of the above. It can be obtained online for 11.75 instantly at www.equifax.co.uk

Although I agree with dust monkey I do know that in the past my ex partner had to disassociate himself from his brother because when he left home he left a lot of debt there and it was causing my ex problems when he was applying for credit.  The other problem with houses let in parts i.e. flats is that sometimes the post office and land registry still see them as one house even though you have separate flats.  Again this could show your bad neighbour as part of the your household.

I would try Experian and Equifax, different lenders use different companies to record their debtors.
