I recently had my wallet stolen with my driving licence and have had the culprit take out a car with Welcome Finance. I informed the police of the initial theft and but only discovered that a car was taken out in my name a few weeks later. I've informed Welcome Finance of the situation and discovered they have lost a car... They are now asking me to come to their offices with details such as all bank statements, passport and payslips for investigation. I asked how they use this for information and lets just say they did not want to disclose the answer to me... Anyone with any experience or knowledge on this situation know why and how this information is required by them, plus anything else i should be considering here.

Phone the police and tell them what has happened. They should be able to give you information on what your next move should be. God luck!

just take the paperwork to them and stop being so obstructive. What have you got to hide? The fact that there was no theft and you've stolen their car for example?

It may be best to own up now and hope that they're lenient with you.

Mamjet, please read the question, I did not state I have anything to hide, I wanted to know how they use the information to investigate... Mamjet please put yourself in this situation, you've just had data stolen from you and now someone else is asking for more data on you, regardless of who it is I think anyone would be a bit cautious and want to know why more sensitive information is being asked of... please restrict your answer to something constructive or just stop wasting your own time.

first thing is to get in touch with the police and inform the DVLC at swansea. the police are the best to advise you i would not take all those things to the finance company.they don't just give out finace for a car with a driving licence did you have other items in your wallet like a utility bill ?

I would give Welcome Finance the crime reference number relating to the case, and ask them to deal directly with the police - they should be able to get the information they require from them.

And don't worry about Mamjet - he just loves to try and wind people up by leaving pathetic responses which don't actually relate to or answer the question being asked. It is an attention seeking thing so people will talk to him. Bless.

do NOT give them this information, they do NOT need it, the police can act using this information. It is far too easy for an employee to clone your identity with said details do NOT hand them over.

Why should you spend your time helping Welcome Finance, who have given away a car through incompetence - not checking adequately who they were letting drive away their car?

Whatever you do, do not send any original documents requested � you could find them used for further fraud. I would ask Welcome Finance for full details of the documents that were presented to them in order to obtain the car. If this was based purely on a driving licence & credit/bank card � I would laugh at them.

It might be worth considering registering your details with an organisation such as CIFAS (costs about �14). Most credit applications check whether your details are held by them � it will not necessarily stop credit being given, but will alert them that your details have been compromised, and that the credit application may be fraudulent � causing them to check out the credit application more thoroughly.

One other thing, I would recommend you don�t rely on credit cards for your forthcoming trip to LA � take sufficient cash.

thanks for your response guys... I had my paper counter part to my license in my wallet as i needed it on the day as well as bank cards. I shall be taking all advice and asking welcome finance to liase with the police on this one.
