When my daughter was shopping at the supermarket today, she returned to her car to find that someone had left their dog in their car.It was a boiling hot day and although the window was open slightly, the dog couldn't get near the window as it was behind a grill in the boot.My daughter made a note of the car's registration but doesn't know who to phone to report this, the police or the RSPCA, and would they do something about it?What's your thoughts on this please? x

I would have gone in the supermarket and had the registration called out.
RSPCA but unlikely they'll do anything.

For all you know the car owner might have just popped in to pick up their dry cleaning or something similar.
Tell her to phone 101 (the police non-emergency number), although I can't see what anyone can do after the event. Maybe they will write to the registered keeper with advice.
try the police non emergency number.....111?...if they cant help they should be able to point you in the right direction
^^^^
oooops meant 101
Can't help I'm afraid Barsel, but I'm sure a few people will tell you the RSPCA are a waste of time.
She should have broken the window....I bet she'd have got plenty of back-up from other shoppers.

Bit OTT, Baths...
@ummm....yeah, you're prolly right,...Barsel didn't say the dog seemed in distress...;)

That's just it, we don't know if the animal was distressed or if the owner had stuck a bowl of water in with the dog or...
...and I'm sure you all remember the episode of Malcolm in the Middle when Mom broke the car window to save the baking dog, releasing an uncontrollable savage beast into a queue of stranded holiday traffic.....

i saw that one Mosaic - that was in a supermarket car park too

the episode was called 'malcolm in the lidl' (i'll get my coat)
Aaww, I used to love Malcolm in the Middle.......

I totally agree with the first reply here from Talbot - especially if the dog was showing signs of distress.

I don't think I could have walked away.
Talbot - heatstroke can kill a dog.

?

Cats don't have nine lives.

Just out of curiosity what did she actually do?
This happened to me in McD's once. I went back into the store and told the staff giving car make, colour and reg. They went around the store and found the owner and INSISTED that they return to the car. They packed their food to go and "helped" them leave. Shops don't want dead dogs in their carparks, its very bad press. You might get a decent response from the police and you might not....
police..they will smash a window ..simple..and I would 999 no messing
And can you imagine the polices reaction if the owner had only popped in to pick up dry cleaning or popped to the cash point?
We just don't have enough details really - how long was the car parked? How distressed was the dog? and so on.
