Firstly can you verbally hand in your notice or do you have to back it up in writing?? secondly, can you give your employer say 3 months notice even though only one is rqd, do they have to agree to that? reason being in a nutshell , i work for a large company and they are being pigs with me , I would probably be finished on the day but if i could give 3 months notice they would have to pay me up ...wouldn't they ?? any advise gratefully recieved , thanks

You need to do it in writing.

No, you can't give three months notice when it's only one in your contract - this is to stop people doing what you have said you want to do.

Thanks Sasha13,
So verbal notice is not legal and should be discounted?? until put into writing ??
I dont see what the advantage would be of giving 3 months notice, just check your contract, give the amount of notice it states, and do it in writing.

It doesn't need to be a formal letter, I know of someone who wrote theirs on the back of a napkin and it was accepted!
If you tried to give someone verbal notice the employer will almost definitely request it in wrinting anyway as they wouldn't have a leg to stand on if the employee later disputed it.

chazza is right though - it doesn't have to be formal.

Thank you to all that have answered, I have a "meeting" tommorow and I just want to know my options, Procedure has not been followed from the companys side and I may raise a grievance and see what happens , feel gutted I have to even bother with this , been there 14 yrs, new big boss comes in and wants to flex his muscles a bit ...lol
try to take someone with you to the meeting
Keep it in the back of your mind that if they get an idea of your resignation, they might make life even more difficult for you in an attempt to get you to leave earlier and therefore not have to pay you.

Right so you can get closure on this thread, ,

I have had the meeting ,letter in pocket and full intention of chucking it if required , My boss stated that we had cross words and we hadn't talked things through as thorough as we should , got some skeletons out the closet and he asked me still to be part of his team and I have accepted .

I thank you all for replying to me , Its always nice to hear someone else's point of view on these matters ,
