Broken window covered by insurance?

I am in rented accommodation and someone threw a bottle through the window and broke one of the panes (of 6). Phoned the letting agency and they say I am responsible for repairs. Surely this comes under the owners building insurance. Advice please.

Building insurance wouldn't cover one pane of glass - the excess would be greater than the cost.

But in any case you need to check the terms and conditions of your lease.

I hate to disagree with Ethel, but I think differently. In my view this is the sort of thing a buildings insurance could & should cover - but Ethel is quite right to say the excess on the policy would very likely be more than the cost.

However, from your point of view it is not something that you, as a tenant, could insure against so - if insurance for it is possible (which I feel sure it is) - it is something the landlord should insure against.

In saying this, I am not thinking of just one pane of glass, but the principle involved - there could be many panes damaged in a vandalism attack. What would the agent say then?

As Ethel says, check your tenancy agreement & then go back to the agent. unless there is something there which makes it clear you are responsible.
