cheap, means not very good cover, are you sure thats what you want.
There are hundreds of companies out there - all after your business. One person's recommendation is another person's nightmare - it depends on personal experiences. M&S have a good reputation for dealing with claims but I find their quotes too high - I'd rather fight my corner if I have to claim.
Home insurance is based on where you live (and other factors) and different insurers assess risk (of a potential claim) in different ways - so it is worth shopping around.
I use one of the sites that search different companies and intermediaries. Here is one but there are lots.

And I do it every year - without fail.
This October for me, premiums have ranged between 137 and 257 for the same cover.
Make sure you set up the same parameters each time you search - some include legal cover as std, for example, some add it on as an extra.
In general it's good deal to buy buildings insurance and contents insurance together as consolidation saves money versus having two policies.
I did what builders-mate has suggested and got my contents ins 150 cheaper than I had been quoted the compnay I had been using for 4 years!

I decided on Direct Line in the end although their travel insurance was rather expensive

I think I'm going to start asking commission from them - if you havent already sorted try Asda! None of the other companies who have tried to persuade me to move can come within miles!
