Have used comparison websites to look for plumbing, central heating and electrical cover, boiler (including boiler service), with £0 excess overall and unlimited level of cover. Arranged British Gas insurance very recently, but may well cancel it, looking at the poor reviews covering service and answering calls. There are quite a few potential problems in the house I feel, so a local tradesman is not the best option in my situation. I realise that I have to examine the small print of the contract carefully
Does anyone have recommendations, please?

Doesn't your house insurance cover emergencies?
I would think you have just chosen the worst insurance you possibly could
Agree with gollob, terrible customer relations.

My house insurance would cover flooding and that sort of category, but not boiler cover/service, central heating, electrical faults...
Will be cancelling British Gas contract
Try Homeserve
I'm with BG and when our fuse box went they came out and repaired it at not charge. We don't have insurance with them.
Sorry to disagree.....but avoid Homeserve......
I found Homeserve very expensive,
I can't recommend British Gas highly enough. I've got Homecare400 covering central heating, electricity, plumbing and drains. You can make appointments on line for when you want. The workmen always take their time and do a proper job because they are not in a rush to get to a more lucrative job as an independent trader might be. I trust their qualifications to do the job and have never been disappointed yet.

My daughter has just bought a house and signed up to the same Homecare400 a month ago. In the last month she has had an electrician to sort out a lighting problem, the boiler man is coming next week to give the boiler an annual service and last week her front drain overflowed and a chap came and cleared the problem. He continued to jet the pipes until he was happy with the flow, a cowboy would have cleared the blockage and left.

For £29 a month for the first year, I think my daughter has had her money's worth already. I pay about £39 a month. We are both women without partners so it is marvellous to be able to call someone who will do the job and not rip you off.

Had frequent 'phone calls from Homeserve, pestering me to renew my contract. I think I might just have to work my way the Defaqto 5 star list.
Thank you all for your thoughts
I've got Homecare400 with BG and I can't fault them. They answer the phone promptly, are here quickly and do the job well. Been with them for 11 years.

Have been trying to cancel contract on the 'phone. Kept waiting for 40 minutes. Wrong telephone number quoted on original confirmation e-mail. Telephone number given 'not available'.
I wouldn't touch Homeserve with someone else's bargepole. My late Mum had Homeserve and we did too. On both occasions when the insurance holder died they were very uncooperative and rude, right at the time when you don't need it. On both occasions they refused to speak to the relative who was phoning, insisting that they needed a letter and a death certificate before they would do anything and indicating that if this wasn't forthcoming quick smart then the insurance would lapse. Every single other company and service that we contacted was both respectful and helpful, all confirming by phone that the service would continue and that no action would be taken over a missed payment. They all asked for sight of a death certificate "in due course" some allowed me to change payment details by phone, the rest said not to worry and to change it when my affairs were sorted. There was 3 years between the two experiences and the last one was 7 years ago.
I use British Gas and am happy with the service....they do subcontract service out (they use Dyno Rod round here for plumbing) when I needed a recent call out, one customer service person made a stupid mistake (scheduled an urgent appointment to a plumber who was not at work until 3 days later) but everyone else went over and above sorting out the problem and the bloke who came was excellent. In the summer I had an overflowing sewage problem and again fast response and excellent service.
I am also with BG. I don't have much experience with them as nothing has gone wrong yet. When I called to book my annual service I got a message saying they weren't answering that line because they were too busy sorting people out (or words to that effect) but I just did a live chat thing instead and got through
