Is the cotton moving freely from the spool to the needle?
There are two tension adjustments. Most people are familiar with the top thread tensioner but not always aware of the lower tension adjustment.

The bobbin tension could be too high. It is adjusted by a small screw on the bobbin near where the thread exits the bobbin.
The reason for the machine missing stitches is probably that the needle is fitted the wrong way round, or is not pushed up as far as it will go.
Otherwise the timing may be out of adjustment, which could also cause the cotton to break. If so a service is required.
