Have you tried one of the free ones yet? Many believe that the AVG anti-virus program is better than any of the pay-through-the nose ones.
There's a couple of 'bigger name' free ones out there, namely AVG and Avast. My personal opinion and experience of AVG is that it looks like it's working, when it actually isn't, despite being kept up-to-date.

So I stopped using it. (any e-mail I receive that says that it's been scanned by AVG and is certified virus-free I always scan myself!).

Avast is better... you can get it here... http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I use my ISP's own anti virus and anit spyware programme - much better than any freebie you can find and it does come as standard with the larger packages (for smaller ones there is a charge)

Don't buy that. Use the free version of AVG:

http://free.grisoft.com/

Or Avast: 4 Home Edition Free here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html

Not both.

And a firewall:

Zonealarm free:
http://filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/

Or Comodo free:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

And an anti spyware - Spybot free
http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_searc h_destroy/

So I suggest you install three things (if you don't already have them)
One anti-virus - AvG or Avast
One firewall - ZoneAlarm or Comodo
One anti-spyware - Spybot.

It does annoy when many companies advertise the fact that if you buy their product you will also receive free anti-virus etc etc when these things are already available for free anyway!
They just take advantage of those not fully internet aware.

I've tried downloading AVG on my lap top but a message saying my security settings wont allow it, I dont understand it! So now I'm downloading it at work on my mp3 player and will then transfer it to my lap-top.
Hopefully it'll work!!
Thanks for all your replies!!
Its worth having a couple of anti spyware programs installed and running both at intervals. I have spybot but also have ad-aware (freeware) installed which is brilliant:

www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Scanning with both they often pick up problems which the other hasn't detected
I use AVG free anti virus,AVG anti spyware

Superantispyware(free)

spyware blaster-I have the paid version which updates automatically but they do have a free version which you udate manually,it provides real time protection

AdAware(free)

Spybot Search and Destroy(free)
