how long do i have to purchase vehicle tax once i have bought a new vehicle before i can get a fine and how long do the dvla have to prosecute for example can they prosecute me now if i did not have tax back in july but have it now? where can i find these time limits from?

Hi kay, I don't know of any limits that allow you to get away with this. Basically as soon as you start using your new car, you have legal requirement to display a valid tax disc. The police can prosecute you if you don't. If you don't tax the vehicle then the DVLA would expect you to declare it off the road (SORN), if you don't then according to the publicity they can issue a fine.

You should tax your car or declare it is SORN as soon as you become the owner, whether you drive it or not is irrelevant

Fines and penalties will automatically be generated by the DVLA computer, nothing to do with the police.
