Let's have some of your practical tips to saving utility expenditure.

such as:
* minimum water to heat in the kettle, make sure the lid is on
* making sure of minimum heat-up time on the oven and switching off power as I take things out or off the rings.
* cutting shower time water
* far more use of the outdoor drying line over the dryer - more assessment of the weather before a wash-load goes ahead.
* use of a thermal blanket rather than heating - my Dreamland, a present, is brilliant and 1p/hour consumption apparently.

Don't leave any non-essential electric items on standby, especially if there's nobody in the house.

Solar powered LED security lights rather than mains. £30 for 4 of Amazon. Really good!
Put washer on overnight if you have cheap rate night time 'leccy.
Make sure all your interior lights are LED.
all common sense there, and should be doing this in the first place DTC
Batch cook, freeze and microwave to reduce use of oven or hob.
Keep the freezer nice and full to increase efficiency.
If you need the heating on, check that radiators are off in unused rooms.


Use a slow cooker rather than the oven.
Don't bath or shower.
Don't do laundry.
Only have cold drinks & food that doesn't need cooking.
Don't watch TV or listen to radio/HiFi.
Learn to see in the dark (keep curtains open & use street lamps).
Sell the car.
Only shop where you get to on foot.
Shoot yourself! (if you have a gun)

Your oven really sucks up electricity. Use a toaster-oven instead whenever possible. A toaster-oven is also much more versatile than a microwave.
Switch off your windscreen-wipers when you're going under a bridge?

I'll ignore the comical ones, though I do like davebro's.....
I have LEDs, itchy - how many LEDs to 1x40W bulb though - I prefer 'ground' lighting to ceiling spots?

Turn the gas off to turn the bacon over and then back on
My mates dad saved £100’s on power in the 80’s.

Did have a fixed term deal with Scottish Power but let it lapse at end of March.The £1,900 price cap is not for gas/electric individually though is it it’s combined,isn’t it?
if it's too expensive people will cheat - simples!
If using oven & have space put a Pyrex bowl of cold water to get hot for the washing up.

on both, that doesn't mean that you won't pay more - it's a cap on the price above a level - use above the calculated level and you'll pay the max unit charge that they can put on you.
