when television first came out what time did programs start each day I know it went off at 10 pm

I can't remember exactly. They had children's programmes on Muffin the Mule and the Flowerpot Men, so possibly about 4ish. I also remember there was an interlude where they showed things like a man ploughing a field - riveting viewing!

Oh yes I remember the potter's wheel. We didn't get Itv for ages, couldn't afford the extra aerial! Just remembered Michael Bentine's TheClangers I loved that, but then I always loved The Goon Show on the radio.

Margo, Michael Bentine did Potty Time. The Clangers were cartoon characters who lived on the moon with the Soup Dragon and ate blue string soup.

I can remember in the 1950s TV started about 1pm with the news and then around 1-30 it was Watch with Mother, after that was close down til about 4 for Childrens Hour. At the end of the evening they always played the National Anthem while showing the Queen on horseback, then the mystery voice would say, 'Please don't forget unplug your TV at the socket'!! Happy days indeed.

maggie, the Clangers weren't cartoon characters, they were stop-go animation figures knitted out of wool and the soup dragon was made of green foam!

I know. I met them all. Honest!!!

The first I remember was Davy Crocket, his fur hat with a tail became a must have us kids.

Zacs, you're absolutely right, how could I forget. I actually knitted Clangers for my son, it was his favourite programme and he later followed a "pop" group called The Soup Dragons.

It was Andy Pandy, Bill n Ben, Woodentops, Rag Tag n Bobtail and Picture Book instead of Muffin the Mule, which was much earlier.
