Why are cigarettes being sold in packs of 19 not 20's anymore
Personally speaking I think they should be sold with free patches too

I have discovered it is usually when you buy in multipacks - this is to stop someone splitting the pack up and selling the packs individually.
Because they sneak off and smoke the extra one behind the company bikesheds, before sending the pack out to retail.
the ones i buy are in 19's
For the same reason as packaged goods are sold at reduced weight; to disguise the price increase.
I think that ciggies ought to be sold in packs of one !

Same size packs as 20's of course. Think of the fun to be had seeing those poor addicted smokers struggling from the newsagents back to their car with 40-60 packets in their pockets !
It's a simple way of cutting costs for the manufacturer.

No need to adjust the packaging machines, just get a free pack to sell for every twenty packs filled.
They used to put less in packets designed for vending machines. 18 instead of 20 and the machine would still take a half crown and dispense change.
Of course, that's going back a while.

Well I saw some in a local shop that were a lot cheaper in 19's than 20's
Stand corrected, sorry - it certainly used to be the reason was split multipacks, seems not so.
I have 1000 fags in sleeves of 200. Stocking up for last winter before Mic became ill. Bought from Asda so perfectly legit. Looks like I'm stuck with them as I only smoke roll ups and not many of those.

Back in the day when I smoked I remember the packets in vending machines had change in the packet
Thats nothing Ric.ror !

In my day, when I gave up smoking in the 70's at age 25, I can remember that packs of cigarettes came with coupons inside...2 for packs of 10 and 5 for packs of 20. But, disappointingly, there were never any Iron Lungs in the Embassy catalogue !
Packs of 19 are over a £1 cheaper than 20. I'd guess it's a tax loop-hole.
they were mostly for polio, weren't they?
I shall never forget, and it's over 40 years ago now, when, after a boozy night out at university, a friend of mine and myself ended up in a motorway service station as we were starving and everything used to shut down at 10.30 in those days. He went to the cigarette machine, inserted 50p and to his chagrin came back, not with 20 B&H, but a packet of rainbow coloured condoms! It was his last 50p piece.
They are cheaper, Ric-ror. I pay £5.90 for 19 Rothmans.
//I pay £5.90 for 19 Rothmans.//

I paid the same price for 400 Kensitas, back in the good old days.
Don't, Blackadder!!
:((
Remember when ciggies came in packets of 5? For 1/- (5p) I could get 5 Woodbines @10d, a book of paper matches for 1d and a penny chewing gum for 1d to disguise the smell when I got home. Total, one shilling. Happy chilhood memories.
