Help for a friend please.

A friend of mine has just had her new scooter knocked over by a car that didn't stop. Two workmen nearby saw it happen and took the culprit's reg number. There is some slight damage done to the scooter which she says she could live with but she is angry that the chap might have got away with it. She asked me whether she should ring the police or her insurer. Once she rings the insurer isn't it out of her hands and she will lose no claims etc and her premium will go up next year. She does have a low excess. Any help I can pass on will be appreciated. What should she do? Thanks.

Phone the police ladybirder, see what they say about it.
IMHO, the car driver, though "maybe" unaware of the collision, has collided with your friends scooter, and subsequently left the scene - and witnessed as doing such by her two independant witnesses, which if they are willing to substantiate her claim, which should be reported to the police, as raising a claim with insurers will require a Police reference number. This is to remove any question of a fraudulant claim from your friend, however this will come at a cost in her insurance renewal next time around, although the other driver involved "may" not be insured - hence leaving the scene asp.

If she does ring the police Tony, without speaking to her insurers, will the police pursue it even if she decides she'd rather just stand the loss herself? As nibble has said, it could come at a cost. Poor woman's only been on the road a couple of months.
The police will at least make the other driver report to their nearest police station to view all their drivers documents,
Why not ask in this correct catogary

I was once sat at traffic lights when a pratt on a moped came alongside and scratched my car and drove off. I took a note of his number, and on reaching my destination I rang the police.
I was gob-smacked when 2 policemen turned up, examined my car, took away the scrap of paper with his number on as evidence, and he got done for it..........I never told my insurance company.
