Using an external hard drive to view movies on a tv help ???

Hi
I have friend over seas who has bought an external hard drive (with remote) pre-loaded with movies etc and has plugged it into his tv and is able to watch movies through his tv.

How can i do this is there a certain external hard drive i need ?
I have a tv with usb/hdmi sockets and also how do I download movies onto this external hard drive ??

any help appreciated Thank you

If it had a remote it wasn't a standard external hard drive, it was a hard drive media player.... like this...
