Picasa 3 has stared to delete albums seemingly automatically without being told to do so. This is of great concern to me as it has permanently deleted a number of much wanted pix from my computer. Yes - I know I should have backed them up on disc but I didn't! Can anyone offer an opinion why this should be happening?

You can also back them up to the internet using the Web Albums feature...the ones you've still got that is....(no idea why you've lost some though)
Also have they definitely gone from your hard drive or just from Picasa?
Has it really deleted your folders from the hard drive or is it just that Picasa is not including the folders in its database?

You can check this be selecting Add Folder To Picasa... in the File menu - that opens the folder manager where you can choose whether a folder is scanned once, scanned always or removed from Picasa (but still exists on the hard drive).
(sorry sidkid, it took me a couple of minutes switching between here and Picasa in order to compose my reply and so I didn't see your 2nd post)
Note your pictues are not "in" Picasa, you are just using Picasa to view them (as you could use other product to view them).

Your pictures may still be on your hard disk somewhere.

You called installed Windows Live Photo Gallery and ask it to try to find all the images on your hard disk.
