I think a campaign should be started to boycott self service checkouts in supermarkets. It's just another step in de-humanising the shopping experience plus the fact that in a few years time there will be need for checkout workers so even less employment opportunity for those who are not academically minded.

Are you suggesting that checkout staff are thick?
dave50 should that read> no need<
I avoid them like the plague.
The ones at my local Morrisons are forever getting problems and are manned by Staff.
Agreed. I steer clear of them due to the very public "Unexpected item in the bagging area" which makes everyone in the queue waiting look in your direction and other snags like "Item needs authorisation" - for a bottle of wine. You end up feeling like a criminal by trying to serve yourself.

''It's just another step in de-humanising the shopping experience''

Yes... because wandering around robot-like behind a trolley whilst gawping aimlessly along with hundreds of others isn't de-humanising at all...

Put everything through as an onion and save a fortune...
Love them.....

Of all the supermarkets the co-op is definitely the best for self service.

Pity it's my least favourite supermarket.
Self-service checkouts allow one to pack shopping at one's own pace and in the order that one prefers, unlike the ordinary checkouts where the goods usually come through too fast, accumulating in a pile at the end no matter how quickly you pack the bags, leaving the next customer with that "get a move on" look as they have to wait for you to move on.
no there won't, they're handy for a few bits and bobs, otherwise you go the checkout, everyone knows that!
Should we also boycott home delivery services and self service petrol stations?
I absolutely adore them. No mindless conversations, no slow packing, they're great... I would personally like to see many, many more of them.

I find them preferable to the torn faced checkout wimmun at my local Tesco
ha ha i annoyed everyone in asda this morning, i was putting my shopping through but the wine went through at the wrong price, so one attendant took the bottle to go check it, which meant my bag wasn't the correct weight so i had my own personal attendant whilst the machine went into meltdown and eventually started crying.

ps i was right about the wine

pps great if you only have a few items, not worth it if you have a load or anything that needs checking like booze
You can get some tills that are like the big check out tils for lots of stuff and one of you can scan and one of you can pack, I've seen them and they're also great :c)

However I do think people should have to take some sort of test, I can't stand when people start using them and then clearly don't know what they're doing.
That's the way to do it Mccfluff ! Grind the whole system to a halt !!! ha ha
Bring back hanging !!!!! :-)))
i just thought it was funny, in my local shop i don't use them as i know the cashiers and have a natter with them
Those of us who don't natter with cashiers find it irritating to have to wait for those at the head of the queue who blabber on and on and on...
I don't agree there, dave.

At least the self-service checkouts in my local Morrison's don't read the bloody paper when I'm in a hurry and on my way to work. I don't want the human experience so I'll stick to self-service.
I like them, but when we were in the States this month I didn't like to use them as I thought foreign-registered credit cards would cause problems; so we went to the ordinary tills and chatted to the cashiers, who all wanted to know about the royal wedding.
I love self service tills, lets hope they continue to reproduce
