How is the best way to remove old Brasso polish from a brass item not polished for more than 30 years. The item now looks like bronze. I dont want to polish it, just remove the old polish from the recesses and groves in the brass without scratching it. Have tried hot water, flash and stiff brush without success. Any sugestions?

Try some white spirit.
The residue is effectively a mixture of dried/hardened copper and solvent anyway .. so I suppose more solvent can't harm much.
Try spraying with WD40 then rubbing off. Works for lots of things including cleaning stainless steel
