now is the best time, just as they are going into winter. You can also divide them in late spring after they have finished flowering but then you need to make sure they can get established during the hot summer weather.

Yes, now is the time to split many perennial plants to give them time to get settled before the winter sets in but don`t plant them too deep or they will rot.
