tips for growing cacti

lately i have asked quite a few gardening Q's...thanks to all for your help but now i have another....:-)

any tips for growing cacti in a container. i plan to put them in an area that is well sheltered and gets a good amount of sunshine but i do worry about the wet winters. (i live in the south east by the way).

any advice on which soil and which cacti to buy etc....?

I inherited various cacti in pots all contained in a fish tank from my late brother, some were pretty some ugly, All seemed to be in "normal" compost.
