My girlfriend has a nasty habit of forgetting to turn an iron off which might eventually cause a disaster. Can you think of anything that would attract attention when the iron is on? The perfect solution would be a plug which goes to mains and into which you plug the iron so whenever the iron is on the plug will beep say every few seconds. But I can't really find anything like that.

Any sensible and not too cumbersome solutions very welcome.

I'll do both ;) Countdown timer will do the job, thanks!
because turning off an iron is generally an automatic thing to do it's easy to forget to do it. i read a tip once that works for me ...... say out very loud ...IRON OFF! and that sticks it in your memory. Also worked for my OH when he could never remember if he had locked the office or not. He said her felt a right Charlie shouting in the street DOOR LOCKED but it saved him driving 16 miles back into check.
Why don't you do the ironing instead?
lol Ethel.
If we are talking about risk, the risk of an iron sat on its end overheating is not greater than the risk of any other heater catching fire. They are designed that way - element stops drawing power once temperature is reached. It then just sits there, at a constant temperature - they same temperature as when being used.
Iron sat on end just doesn't transmit much heat away, as not in contact with damp clothes. So it doesn't draw much electricity from the mains.
My Mother-in-law has plugged her iron into one of those square adaptor things which takes two plugs. She has plugged a radio into the other socket, so that when the iron is on the radio is also on. Switching off at the socket switches both off so she knows that her iron is off if she can't hear the radio!
I have an iron with an auto shut off feature. The iron shuts off if it has not been used for 8 minutes when its stood up on its heel, or 30 seconds if the soleplate is face down.
Is a Breville steam iron. Model IR73
The iron bleeps 6 times and a light on the top flashes when it switches off, and to restart it you have to start ironing again. The instructions still give a warning not to leave the iron unattended when the auto shut off function is in operation.
Seems a good idea for your girlfriend, but I find the 30 second turnoff annoying, it is too short a time and the iron is always bleeping and I have to keep moving the iron till it decides it will turn itself back on. I didnt know it did this when I bought it.. I needed one last year, and it was on offer as it was discontinued at Tesco.
Good though if you have the habit of forgetting to turn off the iron.

LOL that's one way of keeping you going I got visions of a chinese sweat shop all ironing away bleeper and buzzers lights and all Tez
got a 10 second gap there somehow lol Tez
There is another simple way of reminding yourself and works perfectly for everyone about every thing.

Close your eyes for few seconds and visualize yourself doing what you want to remember.

Only once should be fine. Tried and tested and does not cost a penny.
