Get some ant powder and mix it with some water and sugar to form a paste and place near ants nest, but keep children and pets away!!
my mum used to buy a small tube of stuff called Nippon, it is a clear gel which attracts the ants like sugar and what happens is they coat themselves in it and like all ants carry their goodies back to nest therefore infecting all the other ants with it. Death ensues .sorry ants if your reading. If nippon was one of those that you have tried and didn't work for you then good old boiling water from the kettle.
I like Ratters answer best, but you could always use a kettle of boiling water.

tried the water trick, kills the ants that you can see but half an hour later more come back to collect the dead! i will give the other suggestions a go, thanks
I find those ant bait stations really work, inside and out. they are round plastic things with bait inside, the ants collect the bait and take it back to the nest where it kills the whole nest.
they are safe for children and pets too as the hole is only big enough for ants!
