Have never tried it, but once saw programme on telly where they advised a run over with baby oil. Apparently it protects the surface as well as giving it a terrific gleam. Don't know how well it will work on cremated food right enough, although there are specific cleaners available in supermarket. maybe you could use one of those then apply the oil?
I used to have a SS oven hob and the baby oil theory is a winner, not only for protecting it but for lifting finger marks and streaks from cleaning. A steam cleaner should lift the stubborn bits and if you haven't got one of them, try some boiling water and a wooden spoon to rub it off.

Thanks for your replies but I think these specks are actually the early stages of rust and Im going to ring up the supplier as the hobs still under guarantee. Hopefully I'll get a replacement but I need to find out why this has happened in the first place as ive been using nothing stronger to clean it than Cif oxygel and warm water.
"Stainless" steel is actually a misnomer. It should not rust but that does not necessarily mean it won't stain although most stain marks should be easily wiped off. We have some cheap cutlery which has become pitted with black marks probably caused by the dishwasher. Your stainless steel hob should not rust although I would check the blurb that came with it regarding cleaning agents. I would certainly avoid products which produce oxygen (for rusting) such as Cif oxygel and stick with more traditional cleaning agents.
