I don't think carrots are keen on newish manure,If I'm not mistaken they should be planted in a part of garden that was manured previous season with well rotted farm manure. Most farms either sell it cheaply or free. We're lucky,a bloke comes round every Jan flogging it.
Various carrots grow to different lengths,I use Sytan, which is also carrot fly resistant (SUPPOSEDLY) Make sure your soil is as free draining as you can get it,and no stones,or you'll have the weird/rude shaped ones
Hi wonderful,
I'm not a great veg grower like Lonnie but I've picked up some good tips from him and others on here and other keen growers elsewhere.
I think Rock n' Roll hit the nail on the head when he said "no stones" heavy clay produces some freaks as well.
I seem to remember one exhibition grower making hole's in the ground 2-3ft deep with a crow-bar,then placing a land drain or chimeny pot over the top and filling the whole lot with a secret mixture of soil, compost and sand but mostly sand! then pricking-out a single seedling from a row and nurchering it in the tubes to hopefully grow thick, long and straight. Good Luck Tbird+
