In my experience a cylinder mower achieves a better result in the long run because rotary types tend to leave more dross lying which tends to lead to a worse lawn condition. Cylinder mowers are available both powered and manual, but there is not the same choice of manufacturers as with rotary. No doubt there are many differing opinions on this. For me, mowing patterns, etc. matter less than the above considerations.
First off for the best finish Karl is right a cylinder mower is best with at least 6 blades which should also have a back roller to give the bowling green stripe effect...Qualcast are always a good company to check out...as for techniques on mowing assuming a square lawn pick a starting point at one corner on the edge of the lawn and cut a strip clockwise round the edge of the lawn then once you get back to the starting point simply go back and forward in strips till finished....the next time you cut reverse the direction of the edge cut then mow at 90 degrees to the original pattern which stops a thing called washboarding building up which is getting lumps on your lawn.....for further reading try the Lawn Expert by Dr Hesseyen
Cylinder mowers do give a good finish but they are more expensive if you want to get a good one and are best suited to a reasonably level lawn . You can get a wider range of rotary mowers and you can still get them to leave stripes on your lawn . Cut your grass at regular intervals before it gets too long apply weed and feed a few times through the season and scarify the grass or rake it a few times if you don't have a scarifier. I hate cutting grass so don't come round to my house to see if I practice what I preach!! My solution was to cover it with black polythene and cover that with 12 tons of gravel - no more lawn mower !!
