Does anybody have any foolproof home remedies for repelling flies?? We've been inundated this week and have gone through cans of Raid! I did a bit of a Google and one suggestion which it said would definitely work was cut a lemon in half and stud it with lots and lots of cloves, then leave near window/ door where most flies come in. Well if anything is seems to be attracting them even more! Any suggestions gratefully received....

just re-read and your looking for home remedies - fly paper?
Have no idea how you'd go about it tho - maybe smear honey onto greaseproof paper and hang them about the place or buy of one those light doodahs that you see in butchers etc.
Dumping a generous pile of fresh horse *** at bottom of garden will keep them away from your house.
^^ and do wonders for your roses :-D
Keep your windows shut ;-)
Instead of fly spray use hair spray. It glues their wings together and they fall to the floor.
They are driving me potty.

Of course it didnt help that there was the hidden half corpse of a mouse in my study...........
Insert 2x2p coins in plastic bags, fill with water & hang outside doors and open windows. See youtube.
jack; //Instead of fly spray use hair spray. It glues their wings together and they fall to the floor.// and leaves your windows, mirrors, tables, chairs and dog all in a right old mess. :0)

Should've eaten it all then barmaid. Only yourself to blame.
Yeah but you can save a fortune at the dog groomer's, Khandro

2 x 2ps? Wonder how that works?
When I say home remedy I mean instead of paying a fortune on cans of Raid - i.e. Is there something I could put together with what I have here x
Does citronella repel them or is that just mossies?
Rolled up newspaper!
Well I googled a home-made fly trap - you cut a plastic drink bottle in half and put some sugar water or something smelly in the bottom. Then invert the neck into the cut part. Apparently, flies find their way in but cant find their way out. Doesnt work tho, current scores are - home made fly trap = 1 Raid = 56

Ok I e just tried the bag of water one so we shall see- it says to get a clear plastic bag( like a freezer bag) and fill with water then drop either a couple of 2 pence pieces in or a piece of foil hen tie A knot and hang where appropriate. It's mean to create an optical illusion which repels the flies. Watch this space!

Ok I could be tempting fate here, but so far no flies in kitchen in last 20 mins since I hung it at window......
around 17 years ago we lashed out on those chain door curtains that butchers and cafes use. they are brilliant and cut down on the flies by about 90%. I also have one of those blue light zappers in the kitchen which deals with most of the rest. no chemicals needed.
hairspray eh? got 2 cans which I don't use, will give that a go
Hate cruelty to animals but the one which is dancing on me monitor is driving me nuts, it's gotta go...
Remember how difficult it is to get hairspray off things, especially monitor screens and windows BEFORE you start squirting.
