You need to ensure the power consumption of the light(s) is within the dimmer switch's rating range and also you can only connect LED lights to the dimmer if it is the appropriate type. Fluorescent lights (e.g. low energy ones of this type) do not generally lend themselves to dimming.
Welcome to the arcane world of "dimming", Knitters.

The short answer, as always, is "no".

Actually, that's being a tad dramatic. You may have any fitting you like... it's the dimmer that may have to change.

For ordinary filament lamps, the wattage is important. The dimmer must be capable of handling the load.

For LEDs... the load is so small, regular dimmers fail to operate properly. Proper dedicated dimmers have to be used. That in itself is a minefield. One day, LEDs and dimmers will be standardised. At the moment, you have to pair them suitably.
Excuse me, Knits, while I wish my friend Karl a very Happy New Year to come
.......... oh, and you as well of course ;o)

So if I do buy one that the dimmer is not compatible with ( I will avoid LED altogether) the electrician will be able to fit it I will just have to pay more for a new dimmer is that correct? I won't have to return the light fitting?
That's right Knits. Unless the light has a really high load, the dimmer may well be fine.
That is very kind of you, Builder, and I likewise extend my compliments of the season - and, not wishing to dilute this in any way, to Knit plus all others.
