I use a brillo pad.

I also always dry the taps after I've cleaned the bathroom.

'kilrock' available from hardware stores - it worked wonders for me
Limelite is excellent.
Viakal. Or vinegar. The best method I have come across is to take a small plastic cup of vinegar, immerse the tap in the vinegar and wrap a tea towel around both cup and tap to hold it in place. For limescale build-up around the posts and other parts of a tap, soak a pad of cotton wool in your descaling liquid and wrap this firmly around the relevant parts. Leave it there for an hour or two, giving it a squeeze now and again to make sure the acid gets into all the corners and grooves. After this time, all parts of your taps should be able to be wiped clean, though you may need to scrub with a plastic scourer to loosen the more stubborn bits of scale.
the thick limescale remover sold for use on loos.
Anything acidic will dissolve it...if you don't want to spend anything, then vinegar or lemon juice. If you don't mind buying a product, I'd recommend Limelite...they do a gel version which stays where it's put- so ideal for awkward taps.
Soak kitchen towel in vinegar and wrap round the tap.
Slices of lemon packed round the tap and held in place with a tea towel or cloth should shift it. And lemon smells so much better than vinegar.
Leave the lemon slices there for an hour or so then rinse off.
If there is still some lmescale there, repeat the process.
But it is also very helpful to dry the taps after use if you can remember.
If you believe Barry Scott in the TV ads this should do the trick:-
