It is no longer 1st class if it has a 2nd class stamp.
What is this about?
Sorry DN don't really understand the question, 1st class mail is still 1st class no matter when you post it.
if you post in time i.e. before the last collection that day from that post box, then your 1st class letter "should" arrive the next day.

Er, first class stamp, but how does anybody know what class stamp is on a letter within a sealed post box?
Radar.

Seriously, they don't know until it goes through the sorting system.
at the sorting office it will pass through a reader, which will pick up whether it has 1st or 2nd class stamps on it.
I agree with Roslyn, the main thing is to check the collection times on the box.
We have a first class letter box with a second class slot too. Whether the natives hit the right slot is another matter.
Baffled.
The post collector has two sacks and segregates every letter.!!

Ah, now all is clearer with the link.
Surely that's later rather than earlier?
Believe it or not,1st and 2nd Class Mail goes into the same bag, so you may as well just put a 2nd Class Stamp on. This Info is direct from the mouth of my Postman. It may not happen everywhere but certainly does in North Tyneside.
The plan to bring forward collection times will be mainly to the lesser used boxes, those with a high turnover will still have a late afternoon collection.
9am Monday morning is earlier than 5pm Monday afternoon.

Bathsheba, gobbledygook. My local postbox has two opposing labels. Is the idea to make it so confusing that the boxes become redundant and all post must be taken to a Post Office as no one understands and so does not use the postbox?
Yes Mamya but if I put a letter in a box at 4pm on. Monday it won't be collected until 9am on the Tuesday, whereas previously it would be collected an hour later than I posted it. No?

Of course it does, unless the pillar box has two compartments marled 1st and 2nd.

By the way, Everhelpful, I'm in North Tyneside too.
